Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) achieved a total production of 1.46545 million tonne in the year so far, an increase of 5,000 tonnes over what had been planned, it has emerged.

In an announcement after a meeting of the company's board, chairman Dr Ahmed Al Sharayan said GPIC remains focused on its strategy and future projects to double the production of petrochemicals and fertilisers.

Dr Al Sharayan, who is also secretary general of National Oil and Gas Authority, said the company would look to take advantage of economic and development opportunities offered by the petrochemical industry and make the most of the natural resources.

The board reviewed developments and achievements and discussed operational matters.

It heard that despite the challenges the company faced, it achieved a lot in the field of safety, clocking more than 22 million hours of work without a lost time accident.

It also carried out its largest-ever periodic maintenance in terms of number of employees, contractors and businesses involved.

GPIC was founded in 1979 as a joint venture between three GCC countries - Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation and Kuwait, represented by the Petrochemical Industries Company - to take advantage of the natural gas produced by Bahrain as a raw material for the industry.
